▣ Abstract
It
is only after the Second World War the concept of a Southeast Asian region has
been used in a general term. From a strategic military point of view it was
apparent that the term ‘Southeast Asia’ used that was not a scholars’ concern
nor a general interest. The Southeast Asian studies, furthermore, had been
initiated by scholars of Western countries since World War II, but afterwards
became more in depth due to participations of Asian Pacific countries such as
Australia and Japan. The Southeast Asian studies in Korea, however, have a
short history of merely four decades. It took more than twenty years to open
graduate programs for Southeast Asian studies after an undergraduate program of
the Malay and Indonesian studies started to be seriously dealt as an
inter-disciplinary area study. In this manner, Korea started showing interest
in Southeast Asian studies later than an other Asian countries, and it is still
in the process of struggling to set grounds for its survival.
This
lecture, through analyzing conditions of Southeast Asian studies in Korea, will
scrutinize the process of development, limits, current trends, and perspectives
of the Korean Southeast Asian studies. Along with the critical evaluation of
the progress of Korean Southeast Asian studies, this lecture will focus on the
increasing importance of Southeast Asian region in relation with Korea. This
lecture will also dealt with the impending problem of how to create an
increased demand in Southeast Asian countries in general, especially among the
young generation.
