▣ Abstract :

Steel is the most important structural material which is used almost every sector of modern industry because of its excellent mechanical property. However, steel has poor corrosion resistance. To assure the mechanical property and safety of the steel structure for the designed life time, clear understanding of corrosion mechanism and proper application of corrosion protection method are required. Steel corrosion in aqueous environment is most common type of corrosion encountered in the industry.

The basic mechanism of aqueous corrosion is electrochemical reaction in nature. In this lecture, the basic principle of corrosion engineering is introduced with theory of aqueous electrochemistry. Various corrosion types are discussed in terms of corrosion kinetics. A number of corrosion protection methods are also presented briefly.
